Recap: New Orleans Bachelorette

I’m fresh off a trip to New Orleans for my sister’s bachelorette party, so it’s been a whirlwind of hastily thrown together outfits and late nights. I never did the bachelorette thing myself — my sister and I had a low-key weekend in Palm Springs — so this was my way to live vicariously. (PS: Here’s a recap of my sister’s hunt of a wedding dress.)

I’ll be sharing my recommendations for New Orleans in another post, but here are the highlights:

Pat Field, the Sex and the City costume designer, once told a reporter that her favorite part of the job was dressing the main characters for a group scene. Because each woman had such distinct styles, it was a way for Pat Field to editorialize — i.e., use clothes to highlight each actress’ differences.

There were LOTS of Sex and the City references all weekend, but I was constantly reminded of Pat Field’s philosophy whenever I saw a group photo of us. Each woman brought a unique sense of style and packing philosophy to the table.

We wore oodles of TribeTats; they lasted the whole weekend.

Another example of editorializing — each woman got to design her own “arm-scape” of TribeTats. The company generously sent me several sheets of these metallic tattoos, and they were one of the most popular favors.

If you’ve got a girl’s trip coming up, stock up on TribeTats. Women LOVE them, and were were flooded with compliments all weekend. The designs are gorgeous (we used these Belize designs), and they don’t budge until you use an oil-based remover.

It was nearly 100-degrees during the trip, so we all took pains to keep cool. (I am also very proud that everyone wore sunscreen religiously, and no one got a sunburn.) As you can see, whenever things get hot, I reach for my trusty jorts, as per usual.

This loose black Free People dress was a lifesaver on this trip. It was roomy, flattering and kept me cool. It was also sentimental — I wore it during a New Orleans trip in 2013. (Check out two other ways I wore it here.)

For most of the trip, I wore Nike high tops. The braver of the girls (including my sister, the bride) wore heels during our first evening outing. By the end of the trip, everyone was in flats. Aside from my Nike high-tops, I wore a pair of cream Converse, the hottest trend of summer in recent memory:

I don’t bring a lot of jewelry when I travel, but I’ve been wearing these stacked rings from Catbird for months. Because they’re so thin, I don’t get any heat rash. Delicate jewelry is truly a lifesaver for those of us with metal allergies.

Although I extol the benefits of tiny jewelry, look how amazing Carole looks with her stacks of charm bracelets and statement rings. Carole calls herself a minimalist, which may seem like an incongruous statement. But I love the way she interprets her style.

You tell me: How do you pack when you’re heading somewhere insanely hot? And do you take as much pleasure out of observing your friends’ style in action as I do?
