When it comes to fashion, I can be stubborn. If a trend doesn’t work for me the first time, I’ll keep tweaking relentlessly until I discover a version that works. Let’s take today’s look for example — the dress-over-pants, or a modified version of the shalwar kameez. I’ve tried this look with mixed results here and here. Is the third time the charm?
This translucent, long-sleeved version is more summery that my last two versions of this look, which were in silk and cotton. Because this “dress” is essentially see-through, it really only works as either a beach cover-up, an under-layer beneath a sweater and tights OR an over-layer on top of pants.
This type of style is my VERY loose interpretation of Indian street dress. (Although in India, the dress wouldn’t have a collar or buttons.) Coincidentally, I wore this to a Holi celebration near the United Nations building and to a new Met exhibit, Sultans of Deccan India, 1500–1700: Opulence and Fantasy.
And after many experimentations with different versions of a Westernized shalwar kameez, I think I finally found the perfect piece.
