You Could Be a Farmer in Those Clothes

This past weekend was glorious: sunny, productive and three days long. Most of Saturday was spent running errands — finally tackling a stack of Sephora returns, dropping off alterations at the tailor and purchasing groceries (including an organic rabbit) for Easter supper.

I wound up walking 8 miles around the city, so I needed an outfit that was comfortable with flat shoes.

Here’s what I wore for my errand marathon:

Overalls: Zara | Sweater: Nordstrom | Boots: Saint Laurent | Tote: WANT Les Essentiels
Flared Overalls: Zara | Sweater: Lord & Taylor | Boots: Saint Laurent | Tote: WANT Les Essentiels

As I mentioned, I walked halfway across Manhattan, so comfort was key. But I didn’t want to run around in yoga pants and a fleece either.

Sidetone: The “normcore-gym-bunny” look seems to be the unofficial uniform for NYC women on the weekends, and I find it unoriginal and complacent. I suspect it’s an unfortunate byproduct of the Soulcycle era, where fitness crazes replace actual community. But I digress.

This outfit garnered a surprising number of compliments from passersby in Eataly, Sephora and Third Avenue. (That’s an insane ratio — if this outfit were a New York Knick, we’d be in the finals.) I was shocked by the public reaction, since overalls tend to be very divisive. Perhaps the fashion winds are shifting toward chic farmer — although I suspect the positive critical reception may be because of the flare leg, which is making a huge resurgence.

I can’t take full credit for this outfit. I saw Jasmine Hemsley (a model/personal chef) wearing a similar outfit in a cooking video she did with her sister Melissa for Marks & Spencer. (The Hemsley sisters are doing a big promotional push for their new cookbook, which I’ve naturally ordered.)

My inspiration for this outfit was Jasmine Hemsley, a model and personal chef.

You’ve seen elements of this outfit elsewhere on the blog. The overalls first made their appearance here, the sweater was last seen here, and the boots debuted last week here.

Next time I wear these overalls, I’ll probably adjust the straps so the bib sits higher on the chest. But otherwise, this outfit bears repeating — and perhaps copying?

If you own something similar, please take it for a test drive and share the public reaction. If overalls gets the population further away from Lululemon leggings, I’m all for it.
