White Lightning

NYC’s weather is always unpredictable, but today was a real doozy: Sunny all day with a sunset-killing monsoon as dessert. It probably wasn’t my smartest plan to go to the flooded roof while holding a lightning rod of an umbrella during an ELECTRICAL storm. The wide eyes? The fake smile? It’s called TERROR, and it’s real.

Today’s look is my answer to the ubiquitous T-shirt dress. The typical version includes sleeves, minimal detailing and stops either right above the knee or at the ankle, creating an awkward silhouette that’s difficult to downplay or edit. (A blazer isn’t going to do anything to up-sell the typical cut.)

T-Shirt Dress: The Gap ($69)

My version is made out of the same super-stretchy cotton as the Gap design, but it’s souped up with embroidery around the neckline — and an equator of lace doilies around the hem. It has all the easy-breezy comfort of the mall offerings, but it’s infinitely more adaptable for work, dates or a summer party.

The details make all the difference. And because the dress was second-hand, it was less expensive than the Gap version above: A lightning strike of good fortune.
