The Spring Sweater Hath Cometh

This past weekend, I visited my in-laws in New Jersey. I’m a bonafide city dweller at heart, but I guiltily enjoy my jaunts to the ‘burbs — the kitchen feels cavernous, I get to visit Target and I always leave with a tote bag full of hand-me-down home decor, courtesy of the in-laws.

I opted to pack according to the rule of two: That is, I pack two of everything. In this case, it was two sweaters, two pairs of jeans and two different types of shoes.

But the understated star of today’s post is all about the spring sweater:

The spring sweater is the queen of all knitwear. (And yes, there is a hierarchy, although that shall remain for a different post.) While the dreaded winter sweater is woolly and pills feverishly, the spring sweater has drape instead of heft. It’s the sweater that comes out on evenings at Cape Cod instead of the rented ski chalet in Vermont.

But best of all? The open-weaved knits have a very French type of appeal, and I made it my personal mission to imitate a Parisian who can wear nothing but a knit and still look fantastic.

Once again, I’m reminded that simple outfits can be chic, as long as you pair them with the right accessories. For me, that included my trust tissue-weight scarves, a new pair of patent leather slides and the trench coat that won’t quit.

Tell me how you wear your spring sweaters! I’d love to borrow some of your tips.
