Olive These Pants

As I browsed the racks of both Saks and Zara over the weekend, I noticed that both luxury and fast fashion retailers are going gaga for army green. (Perhaps they both bought the same trend report?)

I’m always up for experimenting with new trends in color, but I didn’t want to spend a significant amount of money on the flavor of the month.

These pieces came off the clearance rack at both Gap and Banana Republic.

The olive pants are my one — and likely my only — foray into the “track pants” trend. (Please note that this pair does NOT have a drawstring waist, making them way more acceptable than the usual versions.) I also paired them with a more casual top at the end of this post.

This olive button-up is as basic as it gets — and can easily blend with a more tailored pair of black trousers for the office.

I didn’t want to do a brown shoe — that would make the outfit too muddy — so I opted for a pop of lipstick red.

I know the red doesn’t technically match — but since red is opposite green in the color wheel, it’s actually complementary. Apparently,  yellow and violet are similarly meant-to-be. (Seriously — check out this color wheel theory for more info.)

The shoes were also on clearance and were my first purchase from Tamara Mellon’s eponymous shoe line. Tamara was the co-founder of Jimmy Choo before she started this line — although she’s currently waging a legal battle with her former company. (She’s also the author of my favorite book about the fashion business, In My Shoes. I reviewed the book here.)

Below, you’ll see the more casual way I wore the pants, too. This time, I scrunched up the pant legs and paired them with some of my slouchiest basics. It’s not going to break Pinterest records, but it’s a nice window into how I actually dress when it’s wretched weekend weather.

How are you feeling about olive? Have you been tempted by the color this season?
