My Kitty Sweater is Checking You Out

Fine, winter. I get your point. You started off as just a wardrobe conundrum, but now you’ve morphed into a veritable closet wasteland. When temperatures dip below 0, there is some hardcore truth to the phrase, “I have nothing to wear.”

So be it.

Doesn’t mean I’m not going to have fun.

Today’s outfit inspiration (which I wore last week) is a practical combination of fast fashion staples (like the pleated skirt, last seen here) and my war-hardened winter basics (like the coat, seen here and the beanie, seen here).

But I also included a couple curveballs — notably a golden cat sweater, complete with 3D googly eyes. (I received this sweater in 2010, so I couldn’t find it online, but you can buy the turtleneck version for $85 on Etsy.)

Sweaters are such a basic part of our cold-weather wardrobes, they border on boredom. But this is the only sweater I’ve seen that makes eye contact with onlookers — making it a great element of kitsch in an otherwise somber season.

In addition, I dug my favorite summer sandals out of storage (last seen here) and took them for a spin.

After my last disastrous attempt to layer socks with heels, I’m really happy with this latest experiment. This works because the brown socks’ proportion are perfect (incredibly tall and slouchy), and the socks’  color echoes the mushroom-brown sandals perfectly. The combination creates an unlikely mix of neutrality and funkiness. (Is such a thing possible? Discuss.)

I’ll be out west this week — and enjoying warmer temperatures — but I have posts queued up for the rest of the week. When I return from the balmy temperatures, I’ll hopefully have a renewed sense of inspiration — and the sense that spring is right around the corner.
