How to Pack for a Weekend Getaway

Lately, I’ve been spending weekends in New Jersey to visit my in-laws and bask in the opiate-like atmosphere of the suburbs.

I always take the ferry to Jerz, which is basically an aquatic version of an over-crowded jitney. I dread toting a tote bag onboard, since I usually wind up having to jam up next to a family of five or a dog-walker tied to three pooches.

On a recent weekend trip, I skipped a whole tote bag and just wore the same jeans and shoes for the whole weekend — only switching out the tops.

This sweatshirt depicts the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. (If you need a patron saint of shopping, look no further.) I know I’ve ranted against statement sweatshirts, but this version is just wacky enough to work. This would be excellent as a beach cover-up, too. (Here’s how I wore a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt in Palm Springs.)

You can buy this sweatshirt here, and I recommend going one size down. I also want to warn you that Wildfox’s website has a TERRIBLE return policy (there’s a fee), so try the brand to text for sizing in a department store before you buy. (Nordstrom sells Wildfox and would be a good place to start.)

This second look is what I call “Wet Hot American Summer, the Janeane Garofalo Edition.” I never went to sleep-away camp, but this seems like the perfect outfit for making birdcages out of popsicle sticks. (Let’s face it, I’m not exactly the volleyball type.)

Note how the shoes and jeans remain the same. (I’ll do laundry in the fall.) By simply coordinating everything around a central color — red — you can stretch your wardrobe on weekends away.

Have any weekend packing tips? I’d love to hear them!
