The Foolproof Work Outfit

First, let me apologize for the fuzziness of today’s photographs. Summer is fading quickly — and shaving precious minutes off the “magic hour” that’s so critical for photos. I’ll have a new system in place before we plunge completely into fall. (Sadly, I think it involves photos at 6:45 a.m., in which case I’ll be apologizing for the Samsonite bags under my eyes!)

White Blazer: Bar III (Macy's) | Olive Top: Joseph (Consignment) | Pants: Madewell | Gold-Capped Booties: Thakoon (Consignment) | Large Wooden Pendant: Thrifted (Gainesville, Fla. circa 2004)

But let’s get to the outfit. The blazer and pants are indispensable classics — but their sophistication is heightened when paired with consignment and thrift store purchases plucked from across the formal-casual constellation.

Wooden pendant: Thrifted for $1 in Gainesville, Fla about 10 years ago.
Wooden Mandala Pendant: Thrifted in Gainesville, Fla., circa 2002.

It’s a clash of price points and personalities: mall and luxury, bohemian hippie and rock groupie. The top is asymmetrical and cut like a toga. The pendant is a thrifted mandala I bought with my bagel shop paycheck in college. The booties belong in a White Snake music video. This outfit SHOULD be a total disaster.

But classic color combinations, no matter what the fabrication, can never steer you wrong. (If you’re ever in a workplace rut, I highly recommend calling on the trifecta of black, white and olive.)

And for shoe lovers, here’s a little trivia on the booties, which were an incredibly lucky $80 find in a LES consignment boutique.

My metal-capped booties first appeared on the Thakoon runways for the RTW Spring 2012 collection. They also came in turquoise, but I have not seen that color in consignment.

The shoes are from Thakoon’s Spring RTW 2012 collection. My specific pair were once the property of Karla Otto, a fashion public relations firm. Thakoon was formerly one of Karla Otto’s clients, but the brand’s PR is now being handled by mega-agency KCD That might explain how the shoes wound up in consignment.
