Dressing Up The T-Shirt

Everyone has their favorite item of clothing. For some, it’s dresses. For most, it’s probably jeans — or nowadays, workout leggings. But for me, it’s the T-shirt. (This was not always the case — I had a string of terrible T-shirt purchases, which I detailed here.)

Think about it. Specifically, think about all the ways that more structured clothes betray us. The botton-ups that gape open in inappropriate areas. The jeans that seem to shrink with every wash. (I know you’re not supposed to wash jeans, but that doesn’t really fly with the white versions.)

But a T-shirt is forgiving. It is fun. It’s the only article of clothing that can go from bed to “real world” without a second glance. (I know Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola were trying to make pajamas acceptable for the red carpet, but please — let’s get back to reality.)

This shirt is one of my favorites. It’s actually 100% silk, which lends a nice weight to the fabric. It blouses nicely and has a perfectly crumpled feel — like summer in a shirt. The orange and blue is a subtle nod to my college team, the Gators. (Although it seems more adult to say it’s for the Knicks instead.)

I wore this outfit for a recent casual Friday, and with the addition of the sparkly loafers, it was perfect for a late-night off-Broadway show. (PS: Here’s how I styled statement T-shirts last year.)
