Don’t Make Excuses for Summer Dresses

Sometimes it’s easy to feel guilty when you opt for yet another summer dress. Women often feel like sophisticated style should be opaque to all but Vogue editors — and a dress just seems TOO easy. My inner-critic is fond of chanting, “Oh. A dress. How original.”

But let’s be practical: Choosing a dress over separates means less time stranded in front of an open wardrobe, desperately wishing for Cher Horowitz’s computerized closet. A dress gives you the gift of time — those precious 5 minutes to hit snooze on your iPhone or to squeeze in a pre-work coffee.

And let us not forget the horrible winter we just survived! When we BEGGED for summer, blindly vowing into the howling Polar Vortex that we would do anything, ANYTHING, just to feel the sweet kiss of fresh air on our bare legs again. What was I talking about?

Oh, right. Yes, dresses may be simple to pluck out of your closet line-up, but the art is all in the execution. This Theory dress is monochromatic, so it screams for personalization. I splattered the blank canvas with some bargain accessories: a flea market cobalt belt and $10 vintage scarf. And because picking out the dress was so speedy, I had plenty of time to Google how to transform the scarf into something extra special.
