Gray and Ice

Snow is so beautiful when it falls in Manhattan. A hush falls over the city. Suddenly, chaos quiets under a blanket of fluff. New York turns into an ethereal, crystal city. Everything turns white.

Then the next day arrives. Millions of New Yorkers trudge through the stuff, grinding powder into popsicle slush. Everything becomes sooty and you pack your nice shoes away for a drier day. After last weekend’s snow dump post-Jonas, the city took days to thaw. And my outfit inadvertently mirrored the mire.

I swear, I didn’t pick the palette with that intention. Rather, I had been inspired by this photo, which I spotted on Who What Wear.

I was particularly intrigued by the idea of pairing embellished black boots with lighter-wash trousers. I didn’t want to wear hole-y denim (for obvious reasons — it’s cold enough), but I don’t have the same reservations about a distressed tee. (I got mine on super-sale from Exhale over the summer — here’s how I wore it before.)

The black and gray scarf is Mongolian shearling. (No animals die for scarves like this, by the way — you just shave a lamb.)

You’ve seen the shoes before (here!). They are designer knock-offs, which suit me just fine during weather like this. (Trust me, you don’t want to wear nice shoes in this slush.) The only problem? Cold air has a tendency to flood the shoes, and my toes go numb.

When is spring, again?
